How to Swap Your Driving Test Date Through the DVSA

Swapping your driving test date with another learner is completely legal and done through the DVSA's official phone line. Here's exactly how it works.

What Is a Test Date Swap?

Two learners who both have booked practical driving tests agree to exchange their dates. One wants an earlier date, the other wants a later one. They coordinate between themselves, and one of them calls the DVSA to request the swap. Both receive confirmation. It's that simple.

What You Need

• Your DVSA booking reference number
• Your swap partner's contact details (shared through the platform after both parties pay)
• One of you needs to make the call — you agree between yourselves who

Step-by-Step Process

1. Find a swap partner. This is where DrivingTests comes in — we match you with someone compatible.
2. Agree who will call. Between you, nominate one person to make the DVSA call.
3. Call DVSA on 0300 200 1122. Tell them you want to swap your test date with another candidate.
4. Provide the booking details. The DVSA agent will verify both bookings.
5. DVSA confirms the swap. If everything checks out, the dates are exchanged immediately.
6. Both receive confirmation via email from the DVSA with the new test dates.

Important Rules

• Both tests must be at the same test centre (or the DVSA may allow nearby centres — check with them)
• The tests must be the same type (both car, both manual or both automatic)
• From 9 June 2026, the DVSA will only allow moves to your 3 nearest test centres
• From 31 March 2026, you can only make 2 changes per booking

How Much Does It Cost?

The DVSA doesn't charge anything for swapping test dates. However, if the swap involves changing your test centre, there may be a small DVSA fee.

What If the DVSA Refuses?

The DVSA can refuse a swap if the tests aren't compatible or if either booking has already been changed too many times. If this happens, your dates stay as they are and no money changes hands.
